Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in science and engineering on behalf of national security. The Prototype Fabrication Division provides critical machining, fabrication, and precision dimensional inspection capabilities in support of the nation’s nuclear stockpile readiness mission. We are seeking a CMM Programmer/Dimensional Inspector to join the Applied Metrology Group’s Dimensional Inspection Team. This position will be filled at either QA/QC Inspector 3 or 4, depending on the skills and experience of the selected candidate. This is a regular, onsite role in Los Alamos, NM, with salary ranges as follows:
QA/QC Inspector 3: $64,700 – $101,400
QA/QC Inspector 4: $78,700 – $125,100
Responsibilities for QA/QC Inspector 3:
Develop and execute CMM programs for parts of varying complexity, ensuring accurate and repeatable data collection
Perform dimensional inspections using manual equipment including height gages, surface plates, optical comparators, thread gages, and indicators
Interpret engineering drawings and specifications, including ASME Y14.5 Dimensioning and Tolerancing standards
Validate manufactured components meet drawing requirements and support final product acceptance
Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, clearly communicating inspection results through written reports and verbal discussions
Additional Responsibilities for QA/QC Inspector 4:
Develop advanced CMM programs for complex geometries with sufficient detail for use by other inspectors
Serve as a subject matter expert in inspection methods supporting machining and fabrication operations
Communicate technical inspection results and recommendations to machinists, engineers, and internal customers
Mentor and train junior staff in CMM programming, GD&T interpretation, and inspection techniques
Research, specify, and select measurement and test equipment to support evolving inspection needs
Qualifications
QA/QC Inspector 3:
Associate’s degree or formal Machinist Apprenticeship Program and 2+ years of experience in machining, inspection, examination, or test activities, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience programming and operating CMMs
Proficiency with precision inspection equipment and applied shop mathematics
Experience reading and interpreting blueprints and GD&T requirements
Strong written and verbal communication skills and a demonstrated record of reliability and teamwork
QA/QC Inspector 4:
Associate’s degree or formal Machinist Apprenticeship Program and 4+ years of experience in machining, inspection, examination, or test activities, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Advanced expertise programming and operating CMMs for complex parts
Advanced knowledge of ASME Y14.5 GD&T, including training and mentoring others
Experience with precision inspection equipment, applied shop mathematics, and trigonometry
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including presenting technical data to diverse audiences
Desired Qualifications:
Experience with QUINDOS, PC-DMIS, PolyWorks, or Calypso metrology software
Experience with CMM correction and calibration processes
