Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in science and engineering on behalf of national security. The Prototype Fabrication Division (PF) supports critical Laboratory missions by delivering high-precision manufacturing solutions across a wide range of materials and applications. We are seeking a Manufacturing Manager 3 (Machine Shop Manager) to serve as Deputy Group Leader (DGL) for the Manufacturing Group (PF-MFG), providing operational, programmatic, and technical leadership. This position is a regular, onsite role in Los Alamos, NM with a salary range of $141,500 – $238,300.
You Will:
- Assist in strategic planning, organizing, and managing work acceptance and execution for the Prototype Fabrication Division
- Support development of group resources to execute work across hydrodynamic, subcritical, global security, and external customer programs
- Help manage Integrated Work Documents (IWDs) to ensure work is properly approved and authorized
- Assist in managing workforce training to ensure personnel are qualified and compliant, promoting development and fostering a culture of trust, accountability, and continuous improvement
- Support recruiting, staffing, performance management, employee development, and resolution of personnel issues
- Assist with financial oversight, staffing forecasts, and overall operational effectiveness
- Help ensure a strong safety, security, environmental, and quality assurance posture in all manufacturing activities
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and 5+ years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of directly related education and experience
- Experience managing and leading machining and fabrication operations in small to mid-sized machine shops
- Strong knowledge of industrial manufacturing processes, machining, welding, CNC programming, and tooling development
- Demonstrated success in applying sound business practices, fiscal management, and strategic planning
- Experience managing hazardous operations requiring formal procedures and compliance
- Proven leadership across line management functions with the ability to drive performance and results
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills, with the ability to work across technical and organizational boundaries
- Demonstrated reliability, dependability, and commitment to long-term organizational goals
Desired Qualifications:
- Demonstrated expertise in one or more PF Manufacturing Group mission areas
- Strong commitment to continuous improvement and operational excellence
- Working knowledge of the full scope of Prototype Fabrication Division activities
- Experience operating and overseeing machine tool equipment
- Familiarity with shop management software systems for manufacturing control
- Experience working with hazardous materials and adhering to relevant policies and procedures
